Green St Smoked Meats

$$ - BBQ (American) - West Loop

112 N Green St, Chicago, IL 60607

As Chicago shuts down with extremely temperatures colder than Antartica, Siberia, and others, you can start planning your weekend trip to Green St Smoked Meats.

I went to Green St as it's commonly known at 6:30pm on a Friday night and it was pretty busy. The space attached to coffee shop Sawada with people eating, drinking coffee and working during the day converts into this very fun, darker space at night. It has lights strewn along the ceiling, long wooden picnic tables, a bar area serving beer, pitchers, etc. and the open cooking area where you order.

We grabbed some seats at one of the long wooden picnic tables and waited in line for 15 minutes for food. This was pretty good for Green St - a half hour later the line stretched down the back of the space.

As their name suggests, there's lots of options for meats. You can get 1/2 lb of different cuts, small dishes, sandwiches and sides. Be warned, the online menu is pretty different from what they show in-house. We ordered a pitcher of Chartreuse Mule (gin, chartreuse, ginger beer, lime, cucumber), a wide range of meats which came with slices of white bread + 3 sides to try a bit of everything.

WINNERS

Chartreuse Mule - pretty pricey at 1 pitcher of 9 small glasses for $54 but very good.

Eloté - very creamy and flavorful

Pork Ribs - juicy!

Chopped Brisket - really good sauce and tastes great.

COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER

It makes sense because meat is their bread and butter, so to speak, but there is a lack of other foods. The cornbread ran out by the time we ordered and if you're craving some greens, there aren't a lot of options: the pickled vegetables were pretty disappointing. Also, as a bread lover, I was a little sad to see that the bread accompaniment were small, plain pieces of thin white bread. Finally, they have macaroni salad and no mac and cheese, which seems like a pretty big error on their part.

Final Verdict

A great place to hang out with some friends if you're craving meat. The space is very lively and you'll have a lot of fun here on an evening out in the West Loop.

Tip: Make sure to get there early and have 1 or 2 people wait in line to order while the others nab a table among the other bustling patrons.
