Hallernes Smørrebrød

$ - Danish/European - Copenhagen K (City Center)

Rømersgade 18, 1362 København K

If you want to eat good food in Copenhagen, there’s two main markets with lots of different options to choose from. The biggest option is Reffen - a huge open-air market with 54 street food stalls in a 10,000 m2 (107,000 square feet) warehouse space.

The most central is Torvehallerne in the city center where there are over 60 covered stalls in two glass buildings selling snacks, produce, etc. including a bunch of traditional Danish stores like Mikkeller & Friends Bottleshop for craft beer and Summerbird for flødeboller (marshmallows coated in chocolate).

Hallernes Smørrebrød is a quintessential Danish stall as their main focus is the traditional open-faced sandwiches. Smørrebrød is usually a slice of rye bread with meat, fish, spreads, cold cuts, etc. Hallernes has a very colorful display window of all their different kinds of Smørrebrød - from roast pork with pickled red cabbage to pickled herring.

A specialty is the Fried “Fiskefilet” - a butter-fried fillet of plaice (flounder), homemade remoulade (dill mayonnaise), dill, capers, and lemon. This smørrebrød was delicious - lots of flavor and the bread and toppings complement each other very well. Torvehallerne has a lot of picnic tables where you can sit and enjoy your smørrebrød and other delicious purchases.

FINAL VERDICT

This was my first foray into Danish food and I was pleasantly surprised. Deceptively simple, this humble open-faced sandwich was really yummy and set me up very well to explore more of Copenhagen. Definitely explore Torvehallerne and get some Hallernes smørrebrød, or go to their other shops in Tivoli or Kongens Nytorv (King's Square) in Copenhagen or in Kongens Lyngby a 22 minute drive to the Northwest.
