$$ - Taiwanese - Central

1/F, Soho, Jade Centre, 98 Wellington St, Central, Hong Kong

Teawood is a Taiwanese chain restaurant that started in 2012 and has locations in Hong Kong (6 on HK Island, 11 in Kowloon & 12 in New Territories) and mainland China (1 in Shenzhen and 2 in Guangzhou). They’re known for their beef noodles, fruit tea, and their honey toast - an originally Japanese sweet toast dessert which is very popular in Taiwan.

I visited the location in Hong Kong that overlooks the Mid-Central escalators. It has an industrial feel with black metal roof and room decor with wooden floors and furniture. I got there around 3pm after having a really early breakfast (traveling meal times are very strange) and there were more people than I expected there.

I did not want a full meal but was pretty hungry - the menu has many pictures of delicious looking food and I really wanted to try the honey toast. I also love oysters and upon seeing they had fried oysters, I knew I had to try them. I’d had a single fried oyster before where it’s fried and put in the shell (at Portsmith in Chicago, so good!) but this was an actual course.

I ordered and it took a bit of time (which was surprising for the lack of people) but I was relaxing and watching Friends on my phone - what you do when you’re travelling alone.

The Fried Oyster Pancake was lots of oysters fried into one pancake with some herbs on top.

The Cookies and Cream honey toast had ice cream on top and a yummy inside. This was truly a delicious treat and exactly what I needed before I was heading out for the rest of my day of exploring.

Clearly others agreed with me as it was pretty busy by the time I left at 4:30pm.

WINNERS

Fried Oyster Pancake - the fried with the squishiness of the oysters was soooo delicious, I really enjoyed it!

Cookies and Cream toast - this was similarly delicious - another great flavor combo with the crunchiness and sweetness of the toast and the cookies and cream ice cream on top.

COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER

Time/Service: I had to wait a bit of time to order and for my food to come out which was surprising given the time I arrived at. However, it’s pretty casual and I wasn’t in a particular rush. It wasn’t particularly different from other places in HK and a bunch of restaurant staff were having their meal towards the end of mine.

FINAL VERDICT

I would definitely recommend TeaWood - I liked the atmosphere and the food was delicious + they’re all over Hong Kong!
