The Avocado Show

$$ - Avocado - De Pijp

Daniël Stalpertstraat 61, 1072 XB Amsterdam, Netherlands

If I had to choose a restaurant that exemplified the 2010’s and being “trendy”, I would choose the Avocado Show. With the avocado toast trend reaching its peak around 2013, this restaurant features avocado in every one of its dishes. The display window has pictures of avocados on it and the inside has an industrial ceiling, pink cushioned booths, and a green plant wall. There is an avocado restaurant in Brooklyn, NY called Avocaderia which claims to be the first avocado restaurant but some internet digging revealed it opened in April 2017, while Amsterdam’s Avocado Show opened in February 2017.

I went to their original location in De Pijp area which at 4pm was busy but did have tables free. While the founders are Dutch, the staff are international, which is fitting for the non-traditional, tourist-facing concept.

You would think there’s a limit to the number of things you can do with avocado. However, Avocado Show’s menu is very extensive; ranging from toast (of course) to eggs, smoothies, pancakes, and even dessert. The newest addition was an avocado Oreo cheesecake; the people who know me well know that I LOVE Oreos, cheesecake, and Oreo cheesecake best of all. The time of day and my stomach needing to save space for poffertjes (See De Carrousel in my Amsterdam Travel Diary) meant I, unfortunately, did not have it but hopefully a later trip will let me try it.

I ordered a Truffle Treasure - an avocado toast with smashed avocado + chicken + truffle mayo + parmesan cheese + radish. I’d never seen chicken on an avocado toast before - and I’ve had a lot of avocado toast. It felt a bit weird, I still can’t quite decide if it didn’t go or it felt strange because I’d never seen it before. I did appreciate the protein and it made it a bit more filling which an avocado toast is sometimes lacking.

Final Verdict

Overall, The Avocado Show met my expectations, both in terms of the experience and the food. I didn't find the staff particularly friendly but otherwise I had a good experience.

If the thought of avocado or taking aesthetic instagram/snapchat pictures doesn’t make you excited nor are you willing to spend the extra €€€, then you might want to give The Avocado Show a miss. While an expensive city for the Netherlands, there are plenty of places in Amsterdam that are a lot cheaper and you probably will enjoy the food more. However, as someone who does fit the previous criteria, I was happy I went. I would come back to try the poke bowl the people next to me had and finally get that Oreo cheesecake.
