$$ - Bar/American - Pacific Heights
2301 Fillmore St, San Francisco, CA 94115
The Snug is probably one of my favorite bars/restaurants in San Francisco - a broad and delicious menu, a fun and surprisingly spacious space, friendly staff, and it’s always lively and has a lot of personality. I’ve been there for brunch/dinner/drinks, have sat upstairs and downstairs, with old/new friends and on first/third dates, in summer and winter, and have sat at the communal table by the window, high tables in the middle and the counter/tables in the back. No matter what the situation, the people I’m with and I always have a great time. Other people like it a lot too and so I generally recommend making a reservation but if you don’t mind a not too long wait, then walking in is definitely doable.
BRUNCH
Past dishes have included the Breakfast Burger with wagyu beef + egg + cheese + special sauce + home fries + salad. This sizeable burger is great if you want a delicious filling breakfast and the home fries aka potato cubes are very nice and crispy.
Another is the Avocado Toast on levain bread with radish and sorrel (+ the option of adding burrata at an additional cost). I have had a lot of avocado toast/burrata in my time but was surprised by The Snug’s unique twist.
DINNER (2019)
A great option is the Burrata Toast with grilled sourdough + cherry tomato + pickled onion + basil. However, The Snug does have a rotating seasonal menu and does vary - at the time of writing (Jan 2020) it’s on the menu with beets + satsuma + hazelnut + horseradish + shiso.
There’s also Brussels Sprouts with sunchoke mayo + togarashi (red chili pepper seasoning) and Popcorn Chicken with chicken thigh + yuzukoshō (green chili pepper/yuzu peel seasoning) + mayo + lemon which make good snacks/sides.
2018
The Burrata Toast had mushrooms and there were Korean Fried Chicken Wings with garlic + ginger + soy.
DRINKS
As a big mezcal fan, my go to drink is the Prickly Pear with mezcal (100% agave tequila) + amaro (Italian liqueur) + nopales (cactus) + prickly pear + habanero + lime. The “spicier” than tequila, smoky mezcal flavor is a particular one but non-mezcal lovers have also enjoyed this drink. I also like The Sour with bourbon + chinese plum + egg white + citrus. Bourbon and egg white don’t sound immediately appealing to me but it’s a smooth drink with a great flavor (not pictured).
There’s also the Aloe Vera with tequila + aloe vera + wheat grass + lime, Whisky Smash with bourbon + mint + lemon, and the Strawberry Rose (no longer on the menu). I’ve also enjoyed their Land of Saints sauvignon blanc.
WINNERS
Brunch - Avocado Toast
Dinner - Burrata Toast

FINAL VERDICT
